After spending her childhood behind books, Harlow Blackthorne has rediscovered her love of fairytales... they are just a lot darker, more salacious, and have a hell of a lot more princes now.

Harlow's stories primarily focus on the why choose, reverse harem, and poly romance subgenres. She crafts bold, spirited heroines who wield sarcasm and wit as deftly as they chase their desires. Regardless of space, time, or realm, Harlow believes that the plot is just as important as the characters who reside within and refuses to sacrifice story for page count.

Wary of a brutal cliff, she promises never to publish a book without knowing the trajectory of a story, because nothing is more frustrating for a reader than an untold, abandoned series.

Located in the Southern US, Harlow spends her days doing the typical author things: dreaming up new worlds, covering her office in character and plot point notes, reading while procrastinating on her own novel, and adding more ornaments to her year-round office Christmas tree.

Middle-aged, she lives in a quiet suburban home with her nerdy husband and their outright opinionated cats. Away from her desk, Harlow can be found hopping on cruise ships, trying new bubble teas, and smelling every last damn candle in the store–much to her husband's tempered annoyance.

Harlow firmly believes that every day should be Taco Tuesday, and the world would be a happier place if everyone just picked up a motherfucking book.

Cheers to you for doing just that, friend!

how would you describe your writing style?

A bit of action, a dash of adventure, and a whole heaping ton of plot. And you can't forget the side helping of sarcasm.

My heroines tend to be flawed, bold, and spirited with snarky personalities.

The beauty of Why Choose is that the main female character doesn't have to, which means I get to create a wide variety of men for each story. I love a boy next door, but I swoon over a dark salacious antihero, and have a soft spot for a golden hearted jokester.

I love a good cliffhanger and twist me into a pretzel because I love a shocking surprise. After all, romance is only one element to the story.

What is your writing process?

Every writer is different, and I've tried several strategies. What works best for me is brainstorming the concept by writing a lengthy run-on paragraph that includes all my ideas. I typically come up with character personalities and backstories before diving into the outer appearance things.

Next, I write the plot and key moments out of notecards. From there, I use a combination of Milanote and Pinterest to refine visual elements and key details. Lastly, I plug each notecard into Dibbly Create as a chapter before I begin writing.

I typically write 5-7K per session. Once I'm finished with a chapter, I use Speechify to listen to it to ensure things flow well and dialogue doesn't seem unnatural. When I'm happy with it, I let my first round beta readers know the next chapter is ready and they hop in and give feedback.

Once a book is finally finished being written, there is still editing and formatting to be finished before it is ready for publication.

who designs your book covers?

I have a background in graphic design and photography and enjoy designing book covers myself. That may change in the future. I am a member of a lot of book designers groups, and there are so many incredible artists—I know some day I'll fall in love with a cover so much I buy it.

Are you a cover designer looking to work with me? Send me an email! I love hearing from other creatives, that's how some of the best collaborations begin!

Do you collaborate?

Does Vanilla Ice want you to stop and listen?

You betcha! I love partnering with other creatives, from influencers to artists to other authors.

Honestly, there are a few authors I would totally fangirl if they wanted to co-author a book!

Are you interested in creating something inspired by a Blackthorne book? Creative souls are the lifeblood of society, and Harlow would love to discuss your vision and potentially partner with you! Please email her at hello@harlowblackthorne.com with the subject Merch Licensing.

are you only going to write why choose?

Ooof, that's a tough one!

Honestly, reverse harem is where my dreamy heart is at, but that doesn't mean I've entirely written off mainstream romances. If the right characters spoke out and demanded their story to be told, I would be open to the idea, especially if there was a lot of interest from my fans.
